As a Forward Deployed Individual Contributor, you'll sit at the intersection of Modelcode's product and its most complex customer environments. You will partner with the Forward Deployed Lead scoping the codebase, standing up Morph (cloud or ModelDaemon) against real infrastructure, working through milestone execution with the customer's engineering team, and making sure the code actually ships to production without breaking anything.

This is not a support role and not a pure sales-engineering role. You'll help write real code, debug real build and test failures inside customer environments, and make judgment calls about how a legacy system's business logic should map onto its modernized form, while staying closely connected to the people deciding whether to buy, expand, or renew.

What you'll do

  • Own technical delivery for a portfolio of customer migrations, from initial codebase discovery through production cutover.
  • Deploy and configure Morph against customer environments, including standing up ModelDaemon inside private infrastructure (VPCs, on-prem networks, internal registries and repos) where code can't leave the customer's perimeter.
  • Partner with customer engineering teams to build the Project Spec: mapping architecture, sequencing milestones, and defining acceptance criteria that reflect what "done" actually means for their system.
  • Debug the hard stuff: broken build pipelines, flaky test suites, environment mismatches, dependency conflicts, and edge cases in functional verification, inside real, often messy, legacy codebases.
  • Review and unblock milestones, working alongside customer reviewers to resolve automated code review findings and keep PRs moving through merge.
  • Feed the field back into the product. You're often the first to see where Morph breaks down on a new language pair, framework, or infrastructure pattern, and that goes back to the product and research teams.
  • Build reusable playbooks and tooling so the next migration in a given stack (for example, another COBOL to Java shop) goes faster than the last one.

What we're looking for

  • Strong generalist software engineering ability with 5+ years of experience. You've worked across a range of languages and stacks, and you're comfortable being dropped into an unfamiliar, poorly documented codebase and figuring out how it actually works.
  • Comfort with legacy and enterprise systems: monoliths, mixed dependency management, internal tooling, and systems that predate modern CI/CD norms.
  • Infrastructure fluency. You can reason about networking, containers, CI/CD pipelines, and self-hosted deployment models.
  • Customer-facing judgment. You can sit in a room (or a call) with a customer's engineering leadership, understand what they actually need, and push back when the request doesn't match what will actually work.
  • Hands on at tackling issues while maintaining strong interpersonal skills. Startup experience, prior forward-deployed or solutions engineering roles, or consulting backgrounds all translate well here.

Nice to have

  • Experience with one or more of Morph's documented migration types (Python 2 to 3, Java version upgrades, Ada to C++ modernization, AngularJS to React, Express to FastAPI, and similar).
  • Experience working inside regulated or security-sensitive environments (healthcare, defense, financial services, government).
  • Prior experience with AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, or similar) in a production engineering context.
